In the present work, Dürrenmatt's works Lunar Eclipse and The Visit of the Old Lady are reinterpreted with the help of the theory of intertextuality. A new view of these two works is opened up, which contain numerous foreign expressions and which show a parodic and collage-like tendency. The intertextual analysis of both works reveals: The previous interpretations of these works, which are outlined in the introduction, are only a monological consideration of these multi-layered works that conduct a value-based dialogue with the past. Concepts such as "parody" and "syncretism" themselves also prove to be superficial for these intertextually conceived works. Rather, the two works stand in a value-based dialogical, i.e. questioning-answering and answering-questioning relationship with the great world of earlier texts. They are in turn, against the background of the two world wars, an answer to a core question of humanity. Thus every word of the two works reaches deep into German and European culture and furthermore into the entire history of humanity. Thus this word becomes two- or multi-voiced: It is therefore ambivalent. The word of these two works as the ideologeme of the speaking person is a peak of social speech diversity, which is rooted in German and European society and the entire history of humanity. In this sense, one can say that the previous interpretations of these two works are an absolutization of the partial or apparent aspects read from the syntagmatic axis. The two works prove to be instead a polyphony that negates and deconstructs monologue and homophony and therefore refuses a monological interpretation. Secondly, in this great context, the current meaning of the numerous foreign expressions in these two works was brought to light. Through the semantic context that opens up an extra-textual dimension to the two works and thereby makes it possible to understand them within the great framework of German and European culture and history and furthermore of the entire history of humanity, a new view of them was opened up. In the present work, the intertextual analysis is limited to that of the seven selected pre-texts that decisively co-determine. Here it is about demonstrating the application of the theory of intertextuality exemplarily.
