Product Description

The engagement with medieval philosophy traditionally seems to be rather a matter for specialists; this may be due to the diverse linguistic requirements, but also to the scope of the writings and to the not infrequently still incomplete historical-critical editions of individual authors of this epoch. Yet knowledge of philosophy between the 5th and 15th centuries is helpful in two respects: on the one hand because of the medieval reception of ancient thought, especially the philosophy of Plato and Aristotle, which has been adapted and often transformed for central questions of the Middle Ages, and on the other hand for the purpose of better understanding some innovations of modern and contemporary philosophy with their beginnings in medieval thought. The philosophy of this epoch is not simply one of the "middle" between antiquity and modernity, but of mediation between both epochs. For this purpose, the author presents examples in the following in the form of a selection of his contributions to various lexicons, journals and anthologies of recent decades.
