Author Description

During his lifetime, Paul Stratmann confided to his wife that he wanted to use his diary notes from his captivity. His oral accounts at that time were detailed and interesting and suggested that these three years were bearable for him given the circumstances. When their two sons were old enough for their parents to take them on longer trips, they visited these places of involuntary stay several times and were always received with great warmth. After Paul Stratmann's death, his widow went through his estate and came across the records written in neat, clear handwriting. To her shock, she realized that she had not known a part of her husband's life, especially his spiritual and inner attitude with which he had survived this time. She also found drawings of great significance and soulful subtlety that were created during these three years. She hopes that by publishing the records and drawings, she can contribute a small part to helping people understand each other better and learn to abhor war.
