Product Description

From the preface: Even among controversial philosophy of science theorists like Th. Kuhn and St. Toulmin, there is agreement that there exists something like a more or less well-established 'normal science', from which a science that finds itself in upheaval due to so-called internal reasons – namely regarding some of its essential convictions of methodological or problem-thematic nature – differs not merely superficially. Let us not go into said controversy in more detail for now. – What is rather essential in my view in this context is the fundamental state of affairs that even in connection with commentary and corresponding research, the old demand is decisive whether the majority of those should be authoritative who, in the course of commentary (and everything that this entails) of a great figure in the history of thought, rely more on certain basic convictions of the research community involved, i.e., 'more' unquestioningly engage with what is current in such a 'community', and thus join the great army of those who are 'well-behaved' (this is by no means meant disparagingly) and conduct solid individual factual research; or whether, despite mastering all the craft skills, insofar as critical facts regarding the central research object can be determined, the challenge arises to subject the research prerequisites that have hitherto been authoritatively accepted rather unquestioningly to a more profound critique as the case may be; naturally, such critique can only be taken seriously if and insofar as it would be able to present a better alternative proposal (or several such) regarding what has come under criticism.
