In a contemporary historical narrative, the Bochum-born Günter Brakelmann reports on his return to his homeland destroyed by war. He provides deep, personal insights from his childhood in the Bochum district of Querenburg from the post-war period until before the founding of the Ruhr University. As a trained theologian, social scientist and historian, Günter Brakelmann held the chair for Christian Social Doctrine at the Ruhr University Bochum from 1972 and was instrumental in founding the Association for Research into the Church and Religious History of the Ruhr Area in 1985. His research focuses are the relationship between church and social issues since the beginning of the 19th century, the history of antisemitism and the history of resistance against National Socialism.
