Back cover text: Science-based urban development is gaining increasing importance as a strategy for cities and regions to position themselves in locational competition. This strategy aims to specifically promote knowledge at the location and create science-promoting conditions. This master's thesis examines the science-based urban development of the neighboring cities Bochum and Dortmund and the commonalities, differences and interdependencies of the strategies. The author first develops theoretical foundations on regional economic concepts and relates these to science-based urban development. To capture structures and backgrounds of the strategies of Bochum and Dortmund, she conducted expert interviews as well as analyzed and compared strategies. Britta Hilkmann was born in Dortmund in 1992. After her high school graduation, she began her geography studies at Ruhr University Bochum. She completed her Master of Science with a focus on urban and regional development management. During her master's program, she also completed a semester abroad at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia. There she also gained in-depth knowledge in the field of urban and environmental planning.
